August 4: Animal Day

On a cloudy morning, we arrived at the stork colony in Altreu. There, we visited an exhibition about Beavers and other animals in the Aare as well as learned about the lives of storks and different stork colonies. There are currently 46 young storks living at the colony, who will soon fly to Spain and Africa before returning to mate. After the stork colony we drove to the river Emme where we had lunch and fun in the water. Unfortunately, we did not spend much time here, and soon left to visit a wild animal park in Subingen. Here we saw a bear, lions, tigers, pumas, a very loving alpaca. Along with these animals there were ducks, turtles, pigs, goats, and dogs. At the wild animal park we saw two differnent shows. One included the goats and pigs while  the other included tigers, dogs, and pumas. During these shows it was very humid which made it difficult for the animals to participate and us to pay attention. The show was Swiss German, so very little of what the trainers said was understood. Here at the park, before we were allowed to eat, the organizers (Barbara, Mjria, Marie-Therèse, Beatrice, Christine) created a Swiss quiz involving information we have learned the weeks we have been in Switzerland.
After a delicious barbeque, a rich dessert followed which was enjoyed by the entire group. Before returning to camp there was a quick stop in Solothurn where campers were allowed to shop. Upon returning to camp light refreshments were served before everyone headed to bed after a wonderful day.
