Lions Clubs International (LCI) is the largest service organization in the world, founded in 1917 in Chicago, USA. The worldwide association brings together free-minded individuals, united in friendship, who are ready to face modern social problems and to dedicate themselves selflessly to their solutions.
Lions support people who are in need of help. Whether it is projects for children and adolescents, support for the visually impaired or a catastrophic event – Lions are volunteers dedicated to those who need help. In doing so, they take care of their community members as well as those who find themselves in need across the globe.
“We serve” is our motto. Lions launch their own projects, or extend support to worthwhile projects from our partner organizations – all the while with the goal of helping people to help themselves. In addition to social awareness, Lions also encourage cultural projects and advocate international understanding, tolerance, humanitarianism and education.
In Switzerland the first clubs were founded 1948 in Geneva (foto) and Zurich – alongside Sweden these happened to be the first clubs in Europe.
Today, more than 10,000 people across 266 clubs in Switzerland and Liechtenstein are committed to the common good and towards extending support for the well-being of their fellow citizens and their communities – efficiently, close by and hands-on.
There are men-only and women-only clubs, but also a number of mixed clubs and one cyber club.
